Becoming Real

After my last post, I decided to elaborate a bit. There are many, many things which could be considered "real" which can be done in a mentalism/magic context. Some of these things could be considered rituals, but I am not going to deal with that topic in this particular post.

Here are a few things to get you started thinking about Becoming Real; what follows are demonstrations which can be done legitimately, or by trickery, or by both.

1. Memory Demonstrations/Memory Work
2. Muscle Reading/ Non-Contact Muscle Reading
3. Hypnosis/NLP/Suggestion
4. Lightning Calculations/Human Calculator/Speed Math

That's just a small start and a small look into Becoming Real.

I have some more esoteric ideas on this subject, but I won't be sharing those esoteric ideas in this particular post. I will simply add one item, which could be considered esoteric depending upon context, content, and a whole host of other conditions:

Hopefully this will get you to start thinking about these things, if you haven't been already thinking about them. I am working on a couple applications that give (or seemingly give, depending on your viewpoint), Real Powers to a Participant. Just imagine, if you touched a person and suddenly they could do Lightning Calculations!

Get Real

I was reading an interesting book the other day that was not directly related to magic tricks or mentalism. It gave me the following thought:

We need to stop relying on only tricks and gimmicks; we need to start doing things FOR REAL.

Now, this might be scary to cynics, but there are entertaining things you can do which are real. The level of "real-ness" or the reality-tunnel you choose might have something to do with how things are perceived. Some may argue that parts of the FOR REAL things are not real at all, and that everything is fake. Of course, they would be right...in their own reality.

However, if you stop and think about it, you will find that there are many things you can do which are entertaining and magical/magickal and REAL. There is no modus operandi to expose because you are doing exactly what you say you are doing. One person described what I did as "mind manipulation", because I followed this line of thought and told them what I was doing, and then did it, and it worked.

This approach can take your mentalism to a whole new level.

Fancy Flourishing For The Sake of It

Here's an interesting quote I came across when reading "Mastering the Art of Magic" by Eugene Burger, that puts things into some perspective for me on the whole "Card Artistry"/"Cardistry"/"Extreme Cards"/"Flourishing to Flourish" school of magic:

"Nonetheless, technical expertise alone, except in the rarest of cases, simply is not very entertaining."--Eugene Burger in "Mastering The Art of Magic" page 124.

When you show off your latest "X-treme" flourish, then what? So the deck remains in the same order...that's not an effect, people. That's a method. The idea is to do a flourish at the right moment, with the right plot, to produce the correct and impacting effect.

Once you demonstrate you can cut the cards into 26 separate cuts using your hands, mouth, knees, and eyeballs you have given yourself too much credit. The only logical conclusion of the spectator (there is never a participant for these flourishes...only spectators) is that the "magician" juggles rather well and can do anything with a deck of cards. Thus, when you find the card it is not a big deal. But it should be a big deal.

If you start off by "accidentally" dropping the deck, or with a story about something you saw someone do but you're not sure if it's even possible, or any other number of ruses and ploys you will have participants amazed when you do a card effect because they will have a different outlook about you; an outlook that helps get across the effects.

If you think the Super Duper Great Fifteen Cut Flourish with Your Head is a way to gain attention and entertain people, you just have to watch some of the YouTube videos out there. I saw one where the people in the background looked utterly bored and the Flourish Guy was getting no attention whatsoever.

There is a time and a place for flourishes, and flourishes alone can be entertaining with the proper presentation. But you won't find any talk of plots, drama, structure, subtext, pretext, emotional investment, or any of the IMPORTANT things on MOST of those FlourishSites.

What you will find is something that takes 3 months of practice and doesn't really reward you with anything useful. I suppose the people putting out those products will say that the reward is in learning the material and being able to do the Super Hard Flourish. But when nobody's watching your flourish...do the cards still make a sound?

I have two takes on what has come to be known in mentalism as "The Chair Test". My first take is called "Directing Traffic". While it is mentalism, it provides a lot of leeway for humor and comedy in a situational sort of manner.

The second approach I have titled "Chairvariance Version 1.0". "Chairvariance" gets back to the roots of The Chair Test. While "Directing Traffic" adds humor to a mentalism routine, "Chairvariance" can be downright spooky and very personal for the participant(s).

I've decided to include "Directing Traffic" in an upcoming limited edition ebook titled "Odd Enough". "Odd Enough" will be limited to 25 copies (not counting promotional/review copies) and may be reprinted after December 1, 2010. (NO PRE-ORDERS PLEASE)

One of the few people who has seen the basic idea for "Directing Traffic" is Liam Montier. But even he hasn't seen how I took the basic concept and really expanded on it (sorry, Liam, I'll send it to you soonish...).

As for "Chairvariance", well I might be persuaded to include it in "Odd Enough" as well, but as a Special Preview Section for a hardcover book I am currently working on.

The Structure of Magic

Manifest Your Desires Without "The Secret"

"The Secret" is a pop culture phenomena. It is a DVD and also a book that purpotedly teaches you how to manifest things. Some of the contributors to "The Secret" have appeared on such programs as OPRAH, and Larry King Live.

I watched one of the OPRAH segments. The contributors talked to a woman who was in debt about how she needed to start thinking positively. One of the contributors mentioned that she needed to take actions, such as making her bill paying an automatic process.

The woman was still in debt at the end of the show. There was no sign that after being preached to she would change her ways.

The real secret to manifesting the things you desire is to take Defined Action.

You can think and theorize all you want, but until you take the first baby step, and then learn to walk, and then to run, you'll always be stuck in the same rut.

"The Secret" purports to be teaching long hidden wisdom and secrets. But if you look at the books such as those by Wallace D. Wattles, you'll see that such information has been around since at least 1910.

What did Wattles say was the way to get rich? He said in order to get rich you have to do things a Certain Way.

If you never take Defined Action, it is highly unlikely that you'll get any desired results.

This is akin to learning about a standard sleight of hand move for a magic trick but never practicing the move. You then go out and try to do the magic trick. The magic trick doesn't work out for you. Then, you have some coach tell you that you need to practice the move. But they don't tell you how to practice, when to practice, or why to practice. You already know you need to practice your magic. The only thing that will make a difference is if you take Defined Action, and put the practice in to get the result. Having someone claim they invented the standard sleight and it's been a secret for years, when it's found in some text such as "Modern Coin Magic", is the same thing as "The Secret" contributors claiming that they found secret knowledge.

Now all of that being said about "The Secret", I do admire one contributor. I admire Joe Vitale for his constant marketing, his advertising abilities, and his catchprahse "Money Likes Speed".

I'm not saying "The Secret" is a sham, but I am saying its not the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Solid Deck

The Paul Harris Solid Deck idea is great. You should spend an afternoon to make one up. The effect is that after an Ambitious Card routine, the deck turns solid. You can find the details in the Art Of Astonishment trilogy of books.

There's also a way to make things appear out of the deck, discussed by Paul Harris in the book.

I tend to like the material Paul Harris comes up with, because it pushes the boundaries of what's possible with a deck of cards.

I've purposely not given you a page number so that you'll have to track down all three copies in the triilogy. You need these books if you want to perform something amazing. There's also a few interesting essays throughout the books, including an interview with Eric Mead in one of the books.

Paul Harris is coming out with a set of DVD's sometime--no official release date has been announced. If it lives up to all things Paul Harris-ish, then it will be a great investment.

CHAPTER TWO: Desensitization Deception

It had been a while since I'd last seen B. Bizarre. When I met up with him again, he asked me to meet at one of his favorite department stores, a location which I've been asked to keep secret for various reasons. I entered the department store and B. Bizarre was by the cosmetics counter, laughing heartily at some joke a store employee had just told him.

B. Bizarre and I soon left the department store. B. was scheduled to perform that afternoon for a client who had requested "something strange, not like those other magicians". B. Bizarre promised something she would never forget. It etched indelibly into the minds of everyone present.

We arrived at the location, and B. Bizarre took out a perfume bottle from his bag of tricks. He asked the hostess to assist him. He sprayed some of the perfume onto her wrist and asked her to smell it. She said it smelled like lavendar.

"I will now take away the power of smell from those present, but it is only a temporary state, you will be able to use your noses just fine after a few minutes."

B. Bizarre had several people come up to assist him. He sprayed the perfume on their wrists, but they could smell nothing.

This intriguing demonstration reminded me of my "The Perfume Test" from my ebook 'Bits and Bytes". B. Bizaarre and I left after B. had thoroughly entertained the rest of the guests. We went to a small diner.

"Don't worry. It's just water. I bought a set that lets you make your own perfume bottles, and filled it with water. I didn't use an old perfume bottle because I was afraid of residue. The way I get the lady to smell the lavendar perfume is quite simple. First, I make sure before the show starts that she's not allergic to perfume. Then, I have a novelty squirt ring filled with some perfume. When I pretend to squirt the bottle, I actually squirt the ring's contents onto her wrist. I was inspired by a comment Paolo Cavalli left on The Magic Cafe about your Perfume Test. It's all acting from thereon in."

The Garden Of The Strange

"The Garden Of The Strange" by Caleb Strange is a rare work that combines both high art and practical effects. Some of the items will need elaborate set-up for the initial showings, but the routines are well worth any and all trouble you go through in order to perform them.

My personal favorite out of the book is the routine titled "Junior". After that, my second favorite routine is the last in the book and titled "The Vanishing". Caleb is a master of both theatrical presentation and suggestion/hypnosis/NLP. Combining these two talents with a knack for magic tricks enables him to present effects and routines that have impact.

If you make up one of these routines, adapt it to your personality, and present it with the subtleties and tips given by Caleb, you WILL get a response from your audience.

The only suggestion I would have made for this book would have been some nice illustrations or photos to show some of the interesting concepts employed. This would give the visual learners an aid and help enhance the text.

But as it stands, "The Garden Of The Strange" is a beautiful piece of literature, a wonderful exercise in magical thought, and gives you items that are both interesting and--given enough preparation--practical.

I highly suggest this book.

Fart Machine Brainstorming

Effect: "I hardly knew my next door neighbor. We talked every so often, but he rarely said much. It was almost as if he were hiding something. I knew a little about him. He was a retired comedian. H eadmitted himself that he wasn't very funny. His name was Gregory. He was considered to be on the lowest rung of comedians--that is in the world of comedians mind you and not real people. You see, Gregory was a Prop Comic. This meant he used funny props while he told his jokes--like Carrot Top or Gallagher. The difference was that Gregory--by his own admission--was not funny."

The magician reaches into his case and takes out a document. "So it was much to my surprise when a lawyer called me and told me Gregory had left me something in his will. This is a copy of the will here, the attorney let me have a copy so I could prove where I got this....although I doubt it'll ever be questioned." A radio control style Fart Machine is taken out of the case. The audience giggles a little.

"I thought it was kind of funny too. Until the infuriating part happened. Gregory knew I was into the occult. But I didn't know Gregory was into the same hidden sciences and dark arts." The remote for the Fart Machine is covered with a cushion. The Fart Machine is then handed to an audience member. The lights are turned out.

"Gregory, are you here? Once for yes." The Fart Machine goes off once. A somewhat comedic seance ensues.

As the seance ends, the magician asks the question "Gregory are you funny in the next life?"

Suddenly the fart machine goes off several times in a row.

The magician asks another question but there's no response. "I think he might be angry..." And the Fart Machine goes off once.

Method: This is just me brainstorming, but I think I can use two Fart Machines and that the remotes should be interchangeable. This is because I doubt a Fart Machine needs unique signals like a remote keyless cardoor lock. Now I simply have to hide the duplicate remote. I had two ideas for this. The first idea is not really practical as you need to make a table that you can hide the second remote in somehow and then trigger the remote by moving one of the table legs.

The other idea was to take it apart and out of the comparment--thereby ruining any guarantee on the Fart Machine and also endangering myself of being shocked somehow. Then, if I don't get shocked, I will treat the disembodied remote as a PK Magnet by strapping itto my leg. Both my hands can now be fairly held and Idon't ever have to use a medium's grip. I just have to adjust my legs to set off the hidden remote which should set off the Fart Machine.

Sources of Inspiration: Michael Close has a gag with a Fart Machine in "Closely Guarded Secrets", which set me on the above path. Neil Tobin started a story about a Rubber Chicken on http://www.bizarremagic.net and that also influenced me. Finally, the Spirit Bell routines also had a heavy influence on this light routine.

Notes: I have yet to buy the two fart machines and test this out. Once I have tested it I will try to report back on the results. I also was originally looking for a good kicker climax to the routine, and then scripting came through and I thought of Gregory getting mad, then answering you that YES he is mad and then Gregory's ghost leaves.

D. D. Home (a brief sketch)

Daniel Dunglas Home is my all-time favorite spirit medium. No other medium even comes close to having the elegance, wit, and charm of Home nor the ingenuity that Home applied to making people believe in his supposed powers.

I recently read a book, which I won't name, that gave some methods for Home's achievments. The methods were laughable. A simply consultation with an experienced magician would have done much to educate this person.

Some of my favorite feats of Home include:

Playing an according that was held inside a cage, with one hand

Levitating out a window and back in through another window, while being 85 feet in the air

Elongating (stretching) his body to make himself 11 inches taller under so-called test conditions

The manifestations of spirit hands

A table levitation, wherein everything on the table (such as candles and plates) seemed stuck to the table

D. D. Home never charged money for his seances, although he did accept luxurious gifts such as fancy jewelry, without qualm. He penetrated the high society of Europe and Russia, and became very well known in his time period. The claim that Home was never caught cheating, made by believers and even some non-believers, is inaccurate.

Home was caught out at least three times, perhaps more, but those periods were soon mis-remembered by the general public and aristocracy who so desperately wanted to believe.

D. D. Home was an interesting character, and certainly one of the more ingenious spirit mediums of his time or any time for that matter.

His showmanship was second to none, and for this we can learn from him a great deal.

PS Home also made great waves of publicity when he was accused by the Catholic Church of delving into sorcery! Home wrote a book, later in his life, exposing all the "fake mediums", but claiming his own powers will still real.

Broomstick Billiards

I think this should be an olympic event of some sort. People trained to play billiards with a broomstick instead of a cue stick. I believe I first heard of Amarillo Slim doing this.

Sigma Review

REVIEW OF "SIGMA" by Paolo Cavalli
It’s taken me a while to write this review, because I’ve been pretty busy and I’ve also been testing out some of the things in Paolo’s new e-book "SIGMA" and it also has had my own creativity pumped up by at least ten times. Here’s my favorites:

COINPORT: A two phase routine. In phase one, you materialize a chosen coin in your previously empty fist. In phase two, you materialize a chosen symbol on to the coin while a spectator holds on to the coin.

The second phase has a very clever ruse for getting the symbol on to the coin.

The second phase also has some nice wording reminiscent of Wonder Words that you can use as a foundation to
build a house of deception.

The different aspects of the routine are all covered in very good detail and Paolo explains his thinking behind each step very well.

Coinport got me to thinking about Tony "Doc" Shiels advice that the next psychic superstar could do stuff such as pass solids through solids and materializing objects has always been a strong forte for the psychic. This double materialization is ripe for variations.

E-WAVE: A nearly impromptu version of Phil Goldstein’s "B-Wave" that uses no gimmicked cards, but will take some verbal and mental skill on the part of the performer.Fortunately, Paolo covers how to think on your feet. The wording is subtle and not obvious like so many other routines of this nature.

C.K.C. Planet Earth: A clever version of Paul Curry’s "Out of This World" that turns into a bigger piece by using two spectators and is used as a demonstration of hypnotic mind control, with a great twist for an ending.

This version reminds me a bit of "Challenge Magic" wherein the spectator challenges you to do something but doesn’t realize you have set up the challenge in advance.

Paolo suggests you could use a borrowed deck, but doesn’t go into much detail on this matter. He does, however, go into great detail on using your own deck. And with touches from Ted Karmilovich, you might get your Ted K fix until he releases his book...

THE ECP: There is a lot of other great magic here, but the one thing that stood out the most for me was Paolo’s "E.C.P." concept. I can’t tell what it stands for without tipping the method, but suffice it to say it might as well stand for "Extremely Clever Paolo".

Traveling Light

The magician takes out a very small, miniature briefcase (like the one with that new Tenyo Trick, perhaps?). The magician explains that this is his carry on luggage. He produces two real golf balls from the case. He does some trick with the golf balls. Then he produces a deck of cards from the case and does a card trick or three. Finally, he says "I guess you can tell I travel pretty LIGHT" and produces a lightbulb from the miniature briefcase. The lightbulb is real, and solid. I have two methods plus a third method for producing a string of lights (the type of lights people use to decorate with).

Backgrounds Part 1

I've decided to give everything in my performances an interesting background story, a sort of context for each item. Some of these background stories will remain as part of a Silent Script, and others will be made very explicit to the audience.

The first item I'm going to experiment with is my close-up mat. The background story I am giving to the close-up mat is that it was cut from the felt of an used poker table. I may change this later to being from a used pool table depending on how I feel and the routines I work out around the two different themes. By the way, my close-up mat is green. I don't think this story would fly as well with a red mat.

Obese Pool Players

I read in some forgettable book a great story. Whether or not it is true is for you to decide. "Minessota Fats", the pool player, supposedly set up a shot on a pool table. He had to make the shot 20 times in a row, and then he would get a bite of a sandwich he had prepared. As he got better, he got fatter. And he got reeaalllly good, too.

Comic Book Inspired Bizarrist Comic

I'm working on a new project. I'm creating a comic book. It will be awesome, if I ever finish it in this lifetime.

I figured that since so many bizarrists cite comic books, I might try my hand at making a bizarre comic book. I'm doing the illustrations, and so far they are pretty awful, but at least I have what could be termed a "unique" style--that is if you consider drawing like a 3 year old unique.

But hey, it's art and art is subjective.

The Red Skelton Show

I just finished watching The Red Skelton Show, "Freddie and The Yuletide Doll" episode on DVD. It was excellent!

Magicians could learn a lot by modeling (not copying, but modeling) Red Skelton. His performance was top-notch. He even did some comedy magic bits in the show. It was very interesting to see a coherent plot through the entire 24 minute running time. I have seen very few magic shows that have any coherent plot.

Most magic shows are one trick strung after another. I am trying to not become victim to the one-trick-after-another mentality. I want to have a base storyline or theme that I start out with and that all the routines relate back to in some way. I think one example of this in the magic community would be Christian Chelman aka The Curator with his Surnateum. He is one of the few people who has actually turned performing magic back into performance art--on many levels.

Speaking of performance art, the Red Skelton episode I watched was a great piece of performance art. The Freddie the Freeloader character was very lovable, and the jokes were all put over with nothing ever having to be spoken. It was amazing. I recommend you find this so you can be inspired. I don't know how hard it is to find, but I found it on a compilation disc at Target. The feature film on the compilation DVD is "Santa Claus Conquers The Martians"--I'm serious! That's bizarre enough for any bizarrist!

CHAPTER ONE: Soy Sauce Seer

I had met an interesting character along my travels, who I shall refer to as B. Bizarre to protect his identity. I chronicled some of the adventures I shared with him in 'The Life And Times Of B. Bizarre". That book ended with B. Bizarre leaving for Asia for six months. This book details what happened when B. Bizarre returned from Asia.

B. Bizarre had jsut returend from Japan, so we got a group of friends and clients together to enjoy some Chinese food. B. Bizarre thought it would be kind of a joke to eat Chines food instead of Japanese cuisine. Inevitably, someone asked B. Bizarre to demonstrate something.

"All of you are familiar with fortune cookies, and the last time I was in the states I made a synchronicity using those cookies, but there happens to be another divinig system one can use with Chinese food," commented B. Bizarre.

As B. Bizarre talked, he opened his bottled water and drank a few sips. Then he put a paper clip around a packet of soy sauce and dropped it into the water. The soy sauce packet floated in the water. B. asked a lady to write down a number between one and ten. The soy sauce packet then mysteriously sank and then rose again. It sank three times. When the lady turned over her card, it was revealed that she was thinking of the number three!

B. Bizarre then explained that the Soy Sauce packet could answer Yes/No questions, by sinking once for yest and twice for no. The crowd was very entertained by this little novelty of fortune telling.

After the clients and friedns left, I cleaned up the living room. I was wondering how B. Bizarre controlled the soy sauce packet and figured it had something to do with the paper clip. Thread, maybe? Or, perhaps, a hidden magnet?

"You're probably wondering how I controlled the soy sauce," said B. Bizarre, "And it was a simple matter of physics. You need a bottle of water that has empty inch or two at the top. When you squeeze the bottle, the soy sauce packet sinks. When you let go, the packet rises. I got the idea for using soy sauce packets from a book titled "Pop Bottle Science" by Lynn Brunelle, and then I decided it would best be performed when presented with the right opportunity--that is whne Chinese food has been ordered. Most of the attention is on the paper clip and the soy sauce packet, so as long as you make the squeezing of the bottle light and subtle, nobody will notice. T. A. Waters has a similar effect in "Mind, Myth, And Magick" but he uses an "ancient" tablet to do the divining. I think by using the soy sauce you draw heat away from the source of the manipulation. You can hand out everything for examination in the end, too, just make sure you dump out the water or drink the water so no one figures it out! In this soy sauce version when you press on the bottle you compress the air pocket in the soy sauce packet. As the air is compressed, the packet becomes denser than the water, and then sinks. If you want a whole slew of ideas, I can't recommend the Pop Bottle Science book enough. Obaining the number from the lady was a simple matter of pencil reading. Center tears and peeks allowed me to gain the other information."

"Very well thought-out," I commented.

"I think you'll find my next experiment just as intriguing, if not more so," said B. Bizarre as he left to get in his rental car.

THE SECRET COMMANDMENTS OF MARKETING GODS Part One

This could easily be titled "Things I've Learned The Hard Way", but I thought I'd get more attention by opening up with a good headline. Which brings me to the first lesson.

You've got to be able to grab a prospect's attention. The first way to do this is by using an outstanding headline that goes for the jugular and gets people to read or hear the rest of what you have to say about the product or service you're trying to sell.

But, it doesn't begin with the headline, as I learned from a book by John Carlton. Carlton is a Marketing God, and his book is priceless. I learned about the secret of how to deliver the direct mail letter so that it would actually be opened. Because if your letter isn't presented right, it will go straight into the trash can without being read, no matter how ingenious the headline inside.

You want a first class stamp. You also want to have the name and addreess of your prospect handwriten. And a return address that doesn't mention your business name in the corner. Now it looks like an ordinary piece of mail and will be opened most of the time. Then, if you have a great hook for a headline, the rest of your letter will get read.

DAI VERNON: THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY

I'm currently reading "DAI VERNON: A BIOGRAPHY" by David Ben.

The Good: It is a fascinating read, with rich detail, that keeps you moving through the book. It reveals a lot about Dai Vernon.

The Bad: The sequel won't be out until approximately sometime in 2008.

The Ugly: In Dai Vernon's time, people were selling things that should have been published in a magazine and charging astronoimcal prices. They were also selling secrets they didn't invent. And this hasn't changed today--just the ease of making e-books has exacerbated the problem!

Any serious student of magic (not just magic history, but magic in general) should have this book on their shelf.

It details how a few brave souls used mathematical strategies to beat the blackjack tables, the roulette wheels, and even the stock market. Tied in with their story is a chronicle of organized crime and its repercussions. If you're at all interested in math, this book will provide plenty of fodder for discussion and arguments. Most notably will be the mentions of the Kelly Formula which will either lead you to call these men insane or put them on a pedestal as geniuses, depending on your background. "The Psychic Mafia: The True and Shocking Confessions of a Medium" by M. Lamar Keene as told to Allen Spraggett is a delightful read.

I don't know how difficult is to obtain this book now, but it is well worth seeking out. In the book is a discussion of Apports, as well as other interesting techniques revealed.

Keene even resorts to pickpocketing for information gathering. And this book was written in 1976. Go find a copy and have an enjoyable, informational, and fun read.
